A small amount of clean water in the bottom of your dishwasher is normal. It keeps the seals from drying out. But if you're seeing dirty water or a large pool that doesn't drain, you have a problem that needs attention. Here are the 5 most common causes and how to fix each one.

1. Check the dishwasher filter

The dishwasher filter is located at the bottom of the tub and can become clogged with food particles, paper labels, or other debris. Remove the filter and clean it thoroughly with a brush and hot water. This is the most common cause of drainage problems and the easiest to fix.

2. Check the drain hose

The drain hose connects the dishwasher to the sink or garbage disposal. Make sure the hose is not kinked or bent and is free from any clogs. If there is a clog, try using a plumber's snake or a straightened coat hanger to clear the obstruction. Check both ends of the hose for blockages.

3. Check the garbage disposal

If your dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the disposal is not clogged. Run the disposal and check to see if the water drains from the dishwasher. If it doesn't, turn off the disposal and use a flashlight to look for any clogs. Sometimes food waste from the disposal backs up into the dishwasher drain line.

4. Check the air gap

The air gap is a small device that prevents water from flowing back into the dishwasher. It is usually located next to the faucet on the sink. Remove the cap and check for any debris. Clean the air gap with hot water and a brush. If you don't have an air gap, your dishwasher may use a high loop in the drain hose instead, so check that the loop hasn't slipped down.

5. Check the drain pump

The drain pump is responsible for removing the water from the dishwasher. If the pump is faulty, it may not be able to drain the water properly. To check the pump, remove the bottom panel of the dishwasher and locate the pump. Check the pump for any obstructions or damage. If the pump is damaged, it will need to be replaced. This is typically a job for a professional.

When to call a professional: If none of these steps solve the problem, it may be time to call in a professional to diagnose and fix the issue. Remember to always turn off the power to the dishwasher before attempting any repairs.

By following these simple steps, you can save yourself time and money by fixing your dishwasher that won't drain. If you're not comfortable with attempting the repairs yourself, don't hesitate to call a professional for help. That's what I'm here for.
